The Essentials of Networking

The 6 E's of Networking:

Networking is such an integral part of your job search, career building, and advancement. I remember the first time I heard about networking it was like I was learning a new language. I didn't understand the difference between networking and socializing, that grabbing lunch with someone can be networking if approached the correct way. I began really researching and understanding the art of networking and what it took to network deliberately, strategically, and effectively. During my journey of figuring this new language called networking, I discovered the 6E's. These are the essentials of networking - 6 things that you must absolutely do to network the right way.

(1.) Exercise “value-added” networking – when networking are you thinking about the give and take? Practice adding value to someone else's connection with you; providing service and expecting nothing in return. To be honest I struggled with this first E. Adding value? Giving? Consider this, when you genuinely connect with someone and want to build a relationship with that person all selfish actions go out the window, your focus is on being the best person you can be in that relationship. It's kinda like dating - that relationship is based on an attraction and genuine interest for the other person, it is not predicated on what the other person can do for you, at least it shouldn't be. What I'm saying is that going into that new relationship with something to give is going to open the other person to want to do the same and more. Generally, a person that is not selfish in their networking, not afraid to share is usually the person who reaps the benefits. The concept of giving attracts new opportunities and results in building relationships.

(2.) Encourage “appreciation” networking – consider bettering someone’s day with some encouragement. A relationship has to be nurtured. You must go beyond the connection and that means communication, acknowledgment, and celebration. Allot time in your schedule to build on your relationships by setting up meetings, coffee chats, or touch base phone calls. Recognize their accomplishments and celebrate their wins. Give support and inspire. Why do you appreciate the connection?

(3.) Equalize – see yourself as compatible with others. You are just as good, if not better. Self- acceptance + Self-worth + Self- esteem = Self advocacy. Seeing yourself this way gives you the confidence to comfortably interact with others. (4.) Examine (be thorough) – carefully go through your connections and make a list of “immediate” and “not immediate”. Whom you should stay in constant contact with and whom you can contact later. Do not be a business card networker. The business card networker is the person who collects a lot of business cards from networking events and then does nothing with the cards, they become decorations on the office desk. Going through those connections and applying a system in which to connect and follow up is the beginning of building a fruitful connection. Often times we get so busy in our day-to-day lives and it seems like making that time to connect is so far-fetched but scheduling that time in with your weekly to-do list is a good way to make sure your connections don't go unnoticed. (5.) Engage – networking events, conferences, conventions, parties, workshops, meetup groups are all great places to network. You can just about connect with someone anywhere but be intentional about making those connections. Practice and know your networking pitch. When you know exactly your purpose and reason for networking, it becomes easier to engage and your networking becomes more productive.

(6.) Evolve “expand” networking – Go beyond. Develop your network and expand into unfamiliar industries. Re-invent yourself. Keep improving. Make yourself more appealing and engaging. Build your TRIBE
