Some people find it literally scary to walk into a room and introduce themselves, others just totally don't want to be bothered with doing that, at the same time there are those people that light up at the thought of giving an introduction.

The introduction we are speaking of here is not just any introduction, it is one that is carefully curated for a purpose.

The Networking Pitch:

The networking pitch some people refer to as the elevator pitch, states in the time the elevator takes to go between floors you should be able to articulate who you are, what you do and what you bring to the table. Usually your pitch will be about 30 to 40 seconds, however in some instances you can probably push it to 60 seconds.

It is important that you know your pitch and it becomes a part of you because it speaks to who you are. You should be able to articulate it with confidence, clarity and it must be concise.

How do you craft an effective pitch?

When crafting your pitch take your time and write as much as you can in your first draft. Keep in mind that you will have to edit your pitch multiple times until it is exactly what you want it to be and conveys the message you want.

Be intentional in practicing your pitch, share with friends, family and even your mentor or coach. As you begin to speak your pitch out loud you might need to edit a few more times to get it right on the money. Additionally, ensure that your pitch is interesting, authentic and convincing.

Your Pitch must answer these questions:

  • Who you are?

  • What you do?

  • What you bring to the table?

  • How can it benefit others?

1. Networking is not a bad word - It is building relationships

Approach networking as building a mutually beneficial relationship. Be intentional in getting to know the person by asking questions and genuinely showing interest. Remember a relationship is not one-sided. You cannot build or be in a relationship by yourself, so it is necessary to be open and nurture the connection. Relationship building takes work, so take time to work on it and you will produce a deeper connection.

2. Your Story

What is your story and what do you want people to say and know about you? Are you relatable and interesting? People tend to gravitate to positive energy and stories that they can relate to or learn something from, so make your story appealing and inviting.

3. Do not be Selfish

Networking is not all about you and what you want. How can you build a beneficial relationship if you are focus on your ask? Show a genuine interest in others and focus on building the relationship versus getting what you want. Highlight your value and how you can help or solve the problem. In networking, listening is also very important, so listen and ask questions to get valuable information that will feed and build on the relationship.

4. Share Your Passion

What do you want out of life? What drives you and why? Be clear on your purpose and show your passion. Sharing what you enjoy with conviction can be intoxicating and people will stop to listen. People genuinely want to help others and will seek to connect you with others to advance your growth.

5. Join Groups

Join groups that foster connections and relationship building. Becoming acquainted with others will enable you to practice your pitch in an environment that offers support and growth. Being a part of a group eliminates the fear of being rejected and judged. (Eg.) A Toastmasters Club

6. Be Intentional, Purposeful and Strategic

What is the purpose for attending the event? Who do you want to connect with and why? What specific message do you need to convey in your pitch that clearly speaks to who you are and your value.

7. Practice

Practicing your pitch so that you know it is very essential. You should embody your pitch. It might be a good idea to look yourself in the mirror and practice your pitch before the event. Take a note of your tone, your facial expressions and your confidence in articulating your pitch clearly and concisely. Seek out resources such as a coach or mentor to help you in perfecting your pitch.

We cannot live in this world without relationships. Take the time to build valuable relationships that can directly impact you and others in a positive way. Share your expertise and knowledge to affect change and build a stronger network. Remember after the pitch the real work begins, follow-up, follow-through, and maintain. Your relationships are what will drive your network, and your network drives you.
